What Makes Avatar The Last Airbender Great: Finding Hope in Our Scars

I kind of like Avatar The Last Airbender. Here's why.

Just a few notes and small corrections based on recent comments:
I called "The Boy in the Iceberg" the pilot when it wasn't. It was the first episode, not the pilot. They're different concepts. My bad.
When I mention General How, I meant to say General Fong. How is a completely different character. My bad (though in my defense, they have strikingly similar character designs).
Air vs. Air, in the context of the show's plot, isn't actually a viable match up. I get that. But I was trying to look at it from a general perspective, not just within the context of the narrative.
The Fire Nation knowing about the eclipse wasn't technically a twist, so I probably shouldn't have framed it as such. It's easy to forget that it was revealed earlier since it's a tiny detail in the middle of the season 2 finale that isn't brought up ever again (even during the eclipse, no one refers to it). Nonetheless, my bad.
I've gotten a number of comments basically trying to discredit my recognition of the show's diversity, and I just wanted to note that it was a less than 20 second part of the video that was not in any way trying to say that the reason the characters are great is because they aren't all white males. I recognized it because I thought it was a wonderful thing to see cultures and people that continue to go underrepresented being represented so well in a show from nearly 15 years ago, and I did so in the midst of explaining the actual depths of the character writing. Don't put words in my mouth and act like I was saying something that I clearly wasn't.
I maybe shouldn't have referred to Sokka as an example of toxic masculinity without going into more detail, so let me explain really quick what I meant by that. What the term means to me is how certain men will get so caught up in their own gender role that they end up doing harm both to themselves as well as the people around them. This can take many forms, but I see it mostly as men who believe their worth depends on their ability to protect and provide for those around them and how failing in that is a sign of weakness and a reason for shame: something that Sokka definitely embodies at the beginning of the series. In fact, I believe most of Sokka's arc is centered around him actually coming to a much healthier understanding of what it means to be a man, a theme that runs so deep through Avatar that I could make an entire video about it if I wanted to. If nothing else, I don't want people to think I don't like Sokka or think he's somehow a lesser character to the rest of the cast. He's a great character in his own right.
Yes, I like Sherlock and yes, I prefer FMA 2003 to Brotherhood. I like both quite a bit. I don't care that some of you don't. It isn't even what the video's about. Get over it, please.
Music Used:
From Avatar The Last Airbender: "Agni Kai" "Scarf Dance" "Azula" "Cave Jivin'" "Final Blow" "Invading the Palace" "Opening Theme" "Owns Battle" "Reconciliation" "The Last Agni Kai" "Whose Destiny" "Yangchen" "YuYen" "Zuko on the Mount"
From The Legend of Korra: "Service and Sacrifice" "Greatest Change"
From FullMetal Alchemist: "Pint-Sized Alchemist"

I feel like the first Agni Kai with Zuko was a problem. Zuko was pretty much the main villain for season 1. But there was never really a fight where it felt like he could defeat Aang or even that he was much of a challenge. That didn't get better by the fact that the end of Episode 2 turned Zuko already into a comedy version of himslef, with how tauntingly Sokka bested him. Then we would have Zhao. But he was introduced only to pretty much lose his very fight against someone who already wasn't that threatning. I feel like Avatar truly needed more villains - or at least more of Azula.

There is one character that wasn't mentioned. YOU. The person reflecting the hopes and dreams that we all share. Sometimes we may not be able to articulate ourselves in such a magical way that helps us reflect on our lives and be grateful for our experience, but we all feel it. This summary is something I will carry into my own creativity hoping to achieve what these amazing animators and storytellers have brought to this world.

Diversity of character is far far more important than diversity of characteristic. Identity politics is silly, two of aangs teachers being female means nothing. Two of aangs teachers being toph and katara mean everything. Toph being a blind Asian child only means what it does in context of character. Her struggle with her parents or the power her blindness formed in her. Love the video but emphasis on something so trivial counters why the show is so great in the first place.

I am 28 yo and watching it for the first time. When it first came out I couldn't see it because tv in my country was kinda shitty and would really mess up the episodes and programme so I cought glimpses of it on tv as a teen but never saw more than a few minutes. I'm enjoying it way too much and it has easily become one of my favourite series. Also as an aspiring writer this show is a great sample of strong solid writing and it inspires me not only on an artistic level but also on a personal level. I sure would have loved it as a child but I bet I'd love it more as an adult so I'm happy I'm watching it now even if I'm late. Your analysis was one of the best I've seen and not only is it accurate and smart but it also brought tears to my eyes.

personal note: stopped watching this show to leave for basic training after high school. Picked it up again after my daughter was born, shortly before the Writers strike. Do Not, I repeat, DO NOT watch "Stories of Ba Sing Se" immediately after giving birth. It already wrecks ppl, I had so much regret. Still 12/10 favorite episode highly recomend.

If you can do it like that (a word document with time stamps), I can certainly try to convert it to an acceptable format. I wouldn't be able to guarantee anything, but I'm all for making my videos more accessible. So if you can handle the translation, I can try my best to handle all the technical stuff to make this happen.
estefanía 9 วันที่ผ่านมา
@StoryStreet thank you so much!! i don't know if you mean file as in some special subtitle format file - if that's the case, i wouldn't know how to do it :( but i can make a word document with the translation on it (and maybe indicate the time it should be put in, if that helps!). if anything, when i have it ready and send it to you, please let me know if there's anything i can do to make it better! thank you again!

My kids were 6 and 4 respectively when this show first aired and would constantly ask me to watch this show with them and I was 35 at the time. They watched the first season but quickly lost interest afterwards. But within that long first (20 episode) season, I became totally invested in the characters and their development. The more the season went on the deeper down the rabbit hole I went. To me most interesting relationship was the one between zuko and Aang. And it started in Season one episode 13 "The blue spirt" (The very first episode that I watched) Aang was having a conversation with a barely conscious Zuko, whom which he had jusr carried to safety, and asked "if we knew each before the war do you think we could have been friends back then" For some reason that scene had me locked in. And I had to watch more and know more. I could not get enough. I was blown away by how a children's animated series could have so much depth. Needless to say I am eager to see Netflix's live action series. And I can only hope that it does justice to the original series, which in my opinion was a masterpiece.

Thank you sooo much for this video! I am rewatching avatar with my boyfriend who hasen't seen the show before and he finds it interesting but is not really connectng with the show like I did as a kid. He is now 26, and I understand that it is different for an adult watching for the first time. But I've tried to explain to him WHY the show is so beloved and worth watching and this video really put some more motivational phrases in my vocabulary, so thank you! We've only gotten a few episodes into season 2, I hope he'll get more and more hooked, I mean, the second and especially last season are my favorites and where it all "goes down".

HEY YOU! Yes, you, sitting behind your screen reading this. I don't know you and you don't know me. But I want to tell you something. Everyone has their own story. I want you to know that you're a beautiful, wonderful, talented person. Even if your life isn't going the way you want it to right now, I know that you'll be able to make it out alright. Even if you aren't the prettiest or the smartest or the funniest, you're something that no one else can be. Even if you have scars all over you, it just proves and shows us where you have been, and have been going through. you're smart. even if its not in maths, science or english, you're a genius at something. you're different from everyone else and be proud of that, express yourself. Be confident in yourself. Cry when you feel like crying, laugh when you feel like laughing. Treat yourself like a god/goddess because you deserve it. Hold your head up and keep your heart open. You're worth everything. Always remember that you were born for a reason, you might have no tomorrow so live your life with joy. you might not be in a position you would want to be in but it will get better. i want you all to know that you're special and the best person you can be.

This video was made masterfully. I adored ATLA long before I watched this video, and I have viewed many others that try to express the same idea, but this one explains the meaning of this show the best. Iroh wasn't the backbone of the entire video and Aang's struggle wasn't neglected simply because he's the main character. The soundtrack wasn't even mentioned and it's STILL a great video! Attention was well distributed. Good job StoryStreet!

They are passionate and ambition thats why with jeong jeong and the honor system the fire nation has because of they are too passionate too ambitious they burn the world down around them. They have a drive to do better get better move forward. They had to be better to the point where they looked down on the rest and stopped thinking of them as equal or even people.
